Wellesley College Jewett Arts Center Window Replacement & Refurbishment – Wellesley, MA

Sorensen Partners was Architect and OPM for the restoration of the Music Building windows in the historically-significant Jewett Arts Center by American modernist Paul Rudolph. Summer 2020 construction included exterior painting of all Music Building window exteriors with restoration to original historic colors and replacement of a single 12-foot high by 3-foot wide window based on detailed measurements and examination of record drawings. Summer 2019 construction was replacement of a single 12-foot high by 3-foot wide window.

As a part of the design process in spring 2019, the team removed a historic window in-tact and measured and shipped it to custom wood window fabricator Tradewood Windows & Doors for detailed measurement. The historic ‘artifact’ window has been stored at Jewett for further study by students.

The replacement windows are fabricated in mahogany with the original operable metal windows re-glazed, re-finished, and re-installed. New flashing and sills and small modifications to the design of the exterior wood glazing stops create a durable long-term installation for the replacement window.

Fabrication was by Tradewood Windows & Doors. Installation was by A&A Building and Remodeling.
