Camp Winadu “Killer Bees” Bunk – Pittsfield, MA

Sorensen Partners was Architect and Structural designer for Camp Winadu in Pittsfield, MA in Spring 2016 to design and detail a 1-story wood-frame bunk building for the Summer 2016 camp session: a simple well-proportioned summer camp building designed to build bunk culture, facilitate ergonomic use and counselor supervision, and show off structural truss connections and real wood surfaces inside and out.

Winadu Killer Bees Bunk - SORENSEN - 2

The 16-camper bunk building is a wood-sided structure with pitched roof and interior pine board walls. The bunk is fully ADA-accessible and houses 16 campers in a comfortable bunk room with windows on two sides. Adjoining the bunk room is a bath and shower room and a cubbie storage room. The new building was designed to fit sympathetically within Camp Winadu’s existing residential area, using siding, roofing, and finishes that are consistent with camp standards.

The bunk building wa constructed by Winadu’s licensed general contractor on staff. All materials are specified to be sourced economically from local building supply companies. This arrangement allows the camp facilities staff to easily make any future adjustments or repairs to the building.
