Sorensen Partners is committed to advancing design and real estate strategies that promote the re-use of industrial buildings and sites. Addressing brownfield (contaminated) and obsolete industrial buildings and sites by finding compatible and economically viable new tenants and programs keeps urban areas compact and walkable (and counteracts sprawling greenfield development); conserves existing buildings and the energy and material resources used to construct them; and keeps alive both the architectural and cultural history of these highly-relevant work environments where, often, generations of local people earned dignity through work.
Sorensen’s work in addressing factory transformation earned the John K. Branner Fellowship from the Department of Architecture at UC Berkeley for the research project “Transformations: Urban Memory and the Re-making of Marginal Industrial, Military, and Leisure Space” – a global investigation of sites and strategies. The year-long traveling fellowship enabled documentation and data collection for over 110 sites in 12 countries.
