Re-purposing Factories – ‘Dynamic Continuities’

Lawrence, MA – the location of Sorensen Partners’ first office – is one of the most important “Gateway Cities” to watch in the next decade. The city’s compact urban form straddling the Merrimack River, historic common bounded by civic buildings, adjacent retail “high street,” and access to commuter rail make it a unique regional hub to the Boston metropolitan area.

Sorensen Partners is committed to advancing design and real estate strategies that promote the re-use of industrial buildings and sites. Addressing brownfield (contaminated) and obsolete industrial buildings and sites by finding compatible and economically viable new tenants and programs keeps urban areas compact and walkable (and counteracts sprawling greenfield development); conserves existing buildings and the energy and material resources used to construct them; and keeps alive both the architectural and cultural history of these highly-relevant work environments where, often, generations of local people earned dignity through work.

In 2010, an analysis of the research with recommendations for best practices was published in the peer-reviewed journal Int|AR: Interventions Adaptive Re-Use, produced through the Department of Interior Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
